iPhone Color Picker Web App

I couldn’t resist.

You all know I develop for the iPhone as well as my “real job” - so here’s the predictable follow-up article for the color picker post below.

Apple accepted it - nice.

After presenting the color picker tool, I ported it to the iPhone. I thought it would be handy for client meetings, especially for those casual Starbucks meet-ups where you don’t have a laptop around.

Remember, you can add the basic tool to any website, but iPhone users can add a web-clip of this iPhone web color picker and add it to your home screen to quickly discover new combinations and get client feedback or ideas.

Plus, you’ll look very savvy to those you’re trying to wow:)

iPhone users click here to access. Just tap the bars to move the sliders - everyone else use the basic tool.

Color picker tool does not work on iPod touch (1.1.3 not jailbroken). You can enter the values manually but the sliders to adjust color do not work. Works on my MacBook Pro using the trackpad though.

Yes it does, I’m doing it right now. It doesn’t work the same as a trackpad, that’s why the instructions stated “tap the sliders” - I added it to the top of the app for those that don’t read.

Native sliders, like the kind on your “volume” setting will be implemented.

It doesn’t need to be jailbroken, that’s the benefit of web apps vs installed apps.

Maybe it would have been clearer if the caveat “Just tap the Bars…” was just above the bars that the caveat applied to.

As a the principal of my own web design & ad agency, I thought I’d give this a try on my new iPod Touch. Wow! This works as specified. And if one doesn’t clear browser cache, it will also work in areas without online access — much like a stand-alone app. Still, is there any way this could be turned into a stand-alone app? Why? Web servers go down, URLs change, things happen — it’s life. This reminds me of that useful app I got with my PowerBook — Art Directors Toolkit.

Unless the phone is jail-broken it can’t. I am working with the iPhone SDK and making a stand-alone app but currently the new apps aren’t easily distributed to other phones. When iTunes updates to distribute apps much like it does for ringtones then I’ll certainly port a native version.

And the “sliders” will work better too with increments by 1 instead of 10, like the native sliders do right now.
